Digital SLR Cameras

Welcome to my Digital Camera Review Site. This site is intended to give those who are looking for a Digital SLR (DSLR)Camera an impartial review, where each camera is looked at and reviewed independently of any others that may be available.

Digital Single Lens Reflex or DSLR cameras are digital cameras that use a mechanical kind of mirror system in conjunction with a thing called a pentaprism to direct light coming through the lens to an optical viewfinder at the back of the camera. Most of these cameras are the type that are similar in size and appearance to the 35mm Format cameras.

Basically, what happens is, light enters through the lens aperture and strikes the mirror which then reflects the light up at a 90 degree angle to the pentaprism on the roof of the camera. The pentaprism then reflects the light three times which results in the image being rectified for the photographers eye.

Wikipedia defines a Pentaprism as “a five-sided reflecting prism used to deviate a beam of light by 90°. The beam reflects inside the prism twice, allowing the transmission of an image through a right angle without inverting it (that is, without changing the image’s handedness) as an ordinary right-angle prism or mirror would.
The reflections inside the prism are not caused by total internal reflection, since the beams are incident at an angle less than the critical angle (the minimum angle for total internal reflection). Instead, the two faces are coated to provide mirror surfaces. The two opposite transmitting faces are often coated with an antireflection coating to reduce spurious reflections. The fifth face of the prism is not used optically but truncates what would otherwise be an awkward angle joining the two mirrored faces.”

During exposure the mirror assembly lifts up and the aperture is narrowed according to the cameras settings. One shutter opens up to allow the lens to project light onto the image sensor, followed by another shutter covering the image sensor, thereby, ending the exposure. As the shutter resets, the mirror assembly returns to the starting position. This process is sometimes called viewfinder blackout. If the subject of the photos is action photography, then a faster action mirror and shutter assembly would be preferred.

Professional photographers tend to prefer DSLR cameras as they allow a preview of the intended subject right up to the moment of exposure, and because they allow the photographer to choose from a wide range of fully interchangeable lenses and usually give the ability to accurately preview depth of field.

On this site you will find a range of popular Digital SLR Cameras, to choose from, including Canon, Nikon, Sony as well as Minolta Lenses and a wide range of accessories.
